Available now: New SERI Working Paper: Resource Use and Resource Efficiency in Emerging Economies

Resource consumption in industrialized countries and its impacts on the planet are widely studied and discussed. A topic that has so far received far less attention is resource use and resource efficiency in the fast growing emerging economies, such as China, India and Brazil, that are shaping global trends.

SERI Working Paper 12 provides the first assessment of resource consumption and material productivity of 16 emerging economies in Africa, Asia and Latin America between 1985 and 2005. To facilitate comparison, we divided the emerging economies into three different groups according to their dominant strategy of economic development since 1985: resource-based, industry-based and service-based economies.
