SERI ‘s new websites

Since September 2009 SERI Vienna’s new website is online www.seri.at and also SERI Germany is working on its own website, which will be awailable at www.seri.de by the end of this year. Meanwhile you can find a direct link here.

Growth in Transition – International Conference 28 and 29 January 2010, Vienna
The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management invites you to join us on 28 and 29 January 2010 for the International Conference “Growth in Transition” in Vienna. „Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit“ Ringvorlesung
In der Veranstaltungsreihe “Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit” halten prominente AutorInnen von “Zwölf Bücher zur Zukunft der Erde” Vorträge über gegenwärtige und künftige ökologische und sozioökonomische Probleme und Entwicklungen. Jill Jäger wird am 19. November die nächste Vorlesung “Was Verträgt die Erde noch?” geben. Für Details siehe www.risikodialog.at.


Conference on Economic Degrowth for Ecological Sustainability and Social Equity
The second international conference on Economic Degrowth for Ecological Sustainability and Social Equity is planned towards the end of March 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. It is organised by the Institute of Science and Environmental Technology (ICTA), Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, and the organization Research & Degrowth. Second call for papers for ISEE 2010: “Advancing Sustainability in a Time of Crisis”
The 11th Biennial ISEE (International Society for Ecological Economics ) conference 2010 deals with “Advancing Sustainability in a Time of Crisis”. At the moment the second call for papers is announced. The deadline for abstract submission is extended to the 30th November 2009. „Assessment of Assessments“ presented at UN General Assembly
The ‘Assessment of Assessments’ established by decision of the United Nations General Assembly represents the first step in this international initiative to improve our understanding of the oceans and to develop a global mechanism for delivering science-based information to decision makers and the public. Jill Jäger, one of the lead authors from the 17-member Group of Experts tasked with writing the report, presented Chapter 4 of the report on “Best Practice”. Details

Martin Bruckner beim Zukunftsrat Hamburg
Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung “Wie misst man Nachhaltigkeit?” hielt Martin Bruckner in Hamburg einen Vortrag zum Thema “Der Ökologische Fußabdruck als Instrument”. Auf nationaler Ebene aber auch in Unternehmen und in der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung greift man häufig zum Instrument Ökologischer Fußabdruck. Die Großstädte Wien und Berlin haben bereits ihren Ökologischen Fußabdruck berechnet. Die Stadt Hamburg will dieses Instrument genauer betrachten, um diesen Indikator auch für Hamburg berechnen zu lassen. www.zukunftsrat.de


Fritz Hinterberger beim “Denkwerk Zukunft”
Seit Herbst 2007 denkt und redet SERI-Präsident Friedrich Hinterberger in verschiedenen Zusammenhängen im Rahmen des von Meinhard Miegel gegründeten “Denkwerk Zukunft“, dessen Motto lautet: “Zukunft gemeinsam denken”.  Am 20. November findet der 4. Ameranger Disput zum Thema “Weniger Wohlstand – und doch zufrieden?” statt.  Ende November findet die erste Konferenz des Denkwerks statt.


Fritz Hinterberger beim ECR Infotag 2009Am 11.11.2009 fand im Wiener Hotel Savoyen der ECR Infotag 2009 statt. 400 TeilnehmerInnen vor allem aus der Wirtschaft, aber auch Wissenschaft, Verwaltung und Poltik nahmen daran teil. Key Note Speakers waren Ex-Bundeskanzler Schüssel und Michael Braungart. Fritz Hinterberger stellte gemeinsam mit Barbara Schausberger (IGLO) und Werner Moser (bauMax) die Ergebnisse der ECR-Arbeitsgruppe Nachhaltigkeit vor.

SERI unterstützt ECR seit 2007 bei der Entwicklung einer allgemein anwendbaren Methode zur Bewertung der Nachhaltigkeitsqualität von Produkten. Details zum Projekt finden sich hier. Die Präsentation des ECR-Infotages steht zum Download bereit.

Trade and the Environment – New Report on Methods for Environmental Impact Assessment of Global Trade
A new report investigates methods for the assessment of global environmental impacts of traded goods and services. It is the result of the EIPOT project carried out by a consortium of four European research institutions on behalf of the SKEP (Scientific Knowledge for Environmental Protection) network. The report reviews and evaluates environmental accounting methodologies and specifies a suitable integrated approach for quantifying trade-related impacts from a consumption perspective. Details


Das Projekt Lebensklima startet durch!
In der Fallstudienregion Gmunden sind bereits die ersten Schulworkshops fixiert – unser Partner Harald Hutterer (www.heartsopen.com) wird die SchülerInnen in das Thema Lebensqualität einführen und sie auf ihre Aufgabe als InterviewerIn vorbereiten. Gemeinsam mit den SchülerInnen wird dann eine Befragung zur Lebensqualität und Wahrnehmung des Klimawandels der Gmundner BürgerInnen durchgeführt. Erste Ergebnisse dazu wird es Anfang 2010 geben. SERI in action in MELIA
On September 28th, 2009 this year’s MELIA (Mediterranean Dialogue on Integrated Water Management) mangement board meeting was held in Brussels. MELIA aims at establishing a strategic dialogue between experts, scientists, consumers and producers on integrated water ressource management in the Mediteranean region. In this meeting, actual topics like the status quo of the project, the upcoming project workshop, difficulties in the management, etc were discussed. SERI was represented by the project responsible Stephan Lutter. Details


International Experts Workshop “Much more than Carbon Footprint”
There are different methodical approaches to measure ecological sustainability: Carbon Footprint, Water Footprint, MIPS, Ecological Footprint, LCA and many more. On the 16th of October 2009 the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management in cooperation with ECR Austria held the International Experts Workshop “Much more than Carbon Footprint” (details in the agenda).

nachhaltigkeit.at: Monatsthemen “Nachhaltige Veranstaltungen” und Nachhaltigkeit von Produkten online!
SERI leitet seit Anfang des Jahres die Redaktion für nachhaltigkeit.at. Doris Schnepf hat für das Monatsthema Oktober “Nachhaltige Organisation von Events” einen kompakten Einblick in die Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte rund um Veranstaltungen zusammengefasst. Eva Burger und Fritz Hinterberger haben das Monatsthema November mit ihrer Expertise zum Thema “Nachhaltigkeit von Produkten – Bewertung und Sichtbarmachung” gestaltet. Siehe www.nachhaltigkeit.at


Six new CEECEC case study reports now online!
The CEECEC Newsletter of November 2009 has just been published. Click here to read it!
In the CEECEC project (Civil Society Engagement with ECological EConomics) six new case study reports of environmental conflict from India, Belgium and Cameroon have gone online.
The case studies have been developed by CSOs in collaboration with researchers and will form the basis of CEECEC´s forthcoming online Ecological Economics course.

Unter diesem Titel findet am 11. und 12. November 2009 eine internationale Tagung im Albert Schweitzer Haus statt. Die Suche nach systematischen Antworten auf die Nahrungsmittel- und Finanzkrise stehen im Vordergrund dieser Tagung. Publications
Global resource use in a business-as-usual world until 2030. Updated results from the GINFORS model
This book chapter presents results from the petrE project. In petrE, the global economy-environment-energy simulation model GINFORS was applied to simulate different scenarios of the implementation of an Environmental Tax Reform (ETR) in Europe. In this chapter, Christian Lutz and Stefan Giljum (SERI) present the results for a business-as-usual scenario (without additional policy measures) for the extraction of materials in Europe and globally up to the year 2030.

Integrated Regional Assessment (IRA) promotes a better understanding of how regions contribute to global environmental change. Green New Deal
The Greens and the European Free Alliance in the European Parliament recently published a study of the Wuppertal Institute which outlines a Green New Deal for Europe.  Philipp Schepelmann presented the study on during a retreat of The Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament. The study analyses recovery programs world-wide and their “green” components. Based on this analysis the Wuppertal Institute discusses options of a short-term stimulation of European eco-industries aiming at a long-term modernization of the EU economy. Exemplary measures are proposed for a sustainable energy-, mobility- and resource policy. The study is available at:
