SERI involved in indicator development for Europe 2020 flagship initiative on resource efficiency

Creating a resource-efficient Europe is one of seven flagship initiatives of the European Commission in its Europe 2020 process. This initiative shall help decoupling economic growth from the use of resources, supporting the shift towards a low carbon economy, increasing the use of renewable energy sources and promoting energy efficiency. European Commission’s DG Environment is in charge of drafting the Communication from the Commission for this flagship initiative, which shall be published around mid-2011. One part of this work is to determine a set of resource use and resource efficiency indicators, which shall be applied to monitor the success of this initiative.

SERI researcher Stefan Giljum was invited as external expert to a workshop on “resource efficiency indicators” held on 24th of September in Brussels by the Group of Four (DG Environment, EUROSTAT, European Environment Agency, Joint Research Centers). The workshop aimed at reviewing the state of the art in resource use and resource efficiency indicator development and provide an initial list of indicators, which shall be further considered for possible inclusion in the indicator set for the resource efficiency flagship initiative.

As part of SERI’s contribution, Stefan Giljum summarised SERI’s work on resource use indicators, carried out in cooperation with the NGO Friends of the Earth. The short input presentation can be downloaded here.
